In his inaugural lecture as professor by special appointment of the Special Aspects of Private Law, Jelle Jansen will argue that in order to obtain a proper understanding of Dutch private law, it is essential to examine how the law developed into its current form. Because the conceptual framework of private law is derived from Roman law, the latter should act as the starting point for such research.
