For some children, acquiring their mother tongue is child’s play, while for others it requires painstaking effort: that is the central topic of Jaenette Schaeffer’s inaugural lecture. She argues that research results should be combined to create more effective interventions and teaching methods for children with and without language impairments or disorders.
