To be able to develop better methods for the prevention of oral diseases, it is essential that we identify and understand the processes that naturally contribute to the stability of the oral ecosystem. In this context it is important to see bacteria in the oral cavity as an integral part of our physiology, argues Bart Keijser in his inaugural lecture.
