Greater insight into pigmentation disorders is needed not just to improve treatment of these conditions but also to explore new avenues for treating melanoma. The auto-immune response that occurs in vitiligo has an added effect of protecting against melanoma. In her inaugural lecture Rosalie Luiten argues that this could serve as a starting point to develop immunotherapy for melanoma.
