In her inaugural lecture Giovanna Fossati argues that, despite the transition to a digital culture, film and the tradition of photographic film is alive and kicking in the current digital culture.
In a number of ways film culture has even been revitalised, resulting in more interest in the relatively new field of film heritage, as a discipline where the past and future of film come together organically and where theory and practice go hand in hand. The transition from analogue to digital has actually brought the practice, cultural phenomenon and theory of film heritage (film conservation, restoration and presentation, and research into the past and present of film) closer to researchers, professionals and the wider public.
