Jos van Engelen’s valedictory lecture begins 50 years ago, when as an undergraduate he was first introduced to elementary particles and quarks. Fascinated by this new-found world and the accompanying theory of general relativity, he chose to study high-energy physics. Over the last five decades, this field has undergone remarkable development, says Engelen. He illustrates this development by means of his own research and, more generally, the wealth of theoretical and experimental results, from the quark model to the Higgs boson.
