Elly Baan studied the genetic code and function of the HIV-1 protein envelop, focusing primarily on the transmission of HIV-1 from mother to child. Baan's particular interest was to learn more about the characteristics of the HIV-1 protein envelop and about the host's reaction to it, which determines whether the virus is transmitted.
