In his PhD thesis, Dirk Starink covers the history of the air arm of the Dutch army from its inception in 1913 until the general mobilisation of the Dutch armed forces on 28 August 1939, the eve of the Second World War. Starink hereby provides insight into the role that Dutch policymakers attached to the air arm of the army in the defence of their country and the way this was achieved at the moment of mobilisation. In addressing this question, Starink analyses air power thought in the Netherlands, both professional and political, against the background of the international development of aviation and the military use of aircraft during the Interbellum.
