The generation of mice with a deficiency of the AE2 protein has made it possible to characterise the phenotypes of AE2 deficiency. By isolating fibroblasts in these mice, Pablo Hiche created a cellular model in which he studied if, and to what extent, AE2 effectively regulates intracellular pH in a cell type that is not polarised, epithelial or secretory.
