Escherichia coli is one of the most prolific types of bacteria found in the intestinal tract. For her PhD dissertation, Poonam Sharma focuses on the understanding and manipulation of the energetic efficiency of growth of E.coli in glucose limited continuous culture and in glucose excess batch cultures. She hereby deals with the functional characterisation of various components of the respiratory chain of E.coli, which consist of various dehydrogenases, three quinone pools, several reductases and three cyctochrome oxidases.
