Although resuscitation is often a life-saving procedure, it can also be damaging. Artificial respiration can cause damage to the lungs and aggravate existing lung damage. Ilse Kuipers studies the role of pattern recognition receptors and damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in the occurrence of an inflammatory reaction resulting from artificial respiration.
