Despite the fact that Medical and Ethical Review Committees are generally seen as key players in the supervision system, they are also the target of criticism. There is little reliable information about the actual functioning of review committees or the broader practice of ethical supervision: the system is a black box. Jean Philippe de Jong is opening this black box with his research into the ethical supervision of medical scientific research involving test subjects. In particular, he gives an insight into how ethical supervision by Medical and Ethical Review Committees works in practice.
