In addition to increasing the likelihood of pregnancy, the introduction of IVF also caused a rise in the number of multiple-birth pregnancies. Multiple-birth pregnancies are linked to high maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Laura van Loendersloot is developing a model that helps health professionals decide how many embryos to transfer in order to prevent a multiple-birth pregnancy without reducing the chances of a single-birth pregnancy.
