Atypical anti-psychotics are still widely prescribed to schizophrenics. However, these medicines have various undesirable side effects such as weight gain and an impaired glucose metabolism, resulting in a heightened risk of obesity and type-2 diabetes. Elodie Girault is conducting research to determine whether the metabolic side effects of the atypical anti-psychotic drug olanzapine can be attributed to the (undesirable) effects of olanzapine in the hypothalamus.
