Jitske Jasperse argues that the available visual and written sources on Duchess Matilda (1156-1189) offer insight into her tasks at the court of her husband Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. Her research focuses on The Song of Roland, a coin depicting Henry and Matilda and the Gospel Book they commissioned during their reign.
