The Netherlands is an example of a country where efforts have been made to reduce pressure on the criminal courts by channelling certain matters to the authority of the prosecuting services at an early stage. This has resulted in a range of alternative disposal methods. Adriaan Anderson investigates whether this Dutch development can be of value to a South African criminal justice system that is under severe pressure.
