Roanne van Voorst performs research into the ways in which residents of an extremely-flood prone and poor neighbourhood in Jakarta (Indonesia) live with and protect themselves against frequent floods. Her aim is to contribute to an understanding of human behavior when faced with risks and natural hazards, by analysing in detail how and why Jakarta residents handle flood risk in such heterogeneous ways. As part of her PhD thesis, Van Voorst performed fieldwork in ‘Bantaran Kali’, a slum situated along a riverbank which is flooded several times a year.
