In her PhD thesis, Kateřina Chládková aims to find phonological features in perception. The search for features is approached from several angles. First, her aim is to find out whether phonological features are the categories through which adult listeners process the speech signal. Second, to examine listeners’ perceptual patterns in order to determine which phonological features are part of their grammar. Third, to test whether a virtual infant learns to represent the sounds of her language in terms of phonological features. This is done by using simulations of perceptually driven learning.
