Erik Somers uses a historical vantage-point to explore the way in which museums have shaped their functions and responsibilities within a changing society throughout the years. Somers also takes a look at the museumisation of war in the Netherlands. Key themes include the meaning of heritage as presented in war museums, the political memory of the war disseminated by museums, the local and regional significance of museums and the changing representation of the war as it is shaped in concrete museum presentations.
