Jeroen Melief aims to provide a better understanding of the relation between activity and regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis and various aspects of multiple sclerosis (MS): clinical course, constituents of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), lesion pathology, and molecular as well as cellular characteristics of normal-appearing white matter (NAWM). The heterogeneous nature of MS plays a central role in all chapters and the presented findings suggest that HPA-axis activity is a major determinant of this.
