For children in intensive care with life-threatening illnesses, cumulative negative protein levels and the loss of muscle tissue are associated with increased infections, respiration duration and the recovery times of organ function. This ultimately leads to longer stays in intensive care. Vincent Geukers is researching the effect of high versus normal age-related protein intake on the total production, breakdown and balance of bodily protein in children with acute or chronic illnesses.
