Kidneys operate as a natural blood filter by removing waste substances and toxins. Elena Rampanelli is researching acute renal damage induced by intraperitoneal (into the stomach) injections of lipopolysaccharide (large molecules made up of a lipid and a polysaccharide joined by a covalent bond). She is also studying chronic kidney diseases induced by obstruction of the ureter.
