Femke Stephan throws light on the mechanisms and regulation in the removal of nucleosomes (the building blocks of chromosomes) from dead cells by factor VII-activating proteose (FSAP), which is the plasma serine protease responsible for nucleosome release. She hereby explores the role of FSAP in cell death, inflammation and autoimmunity.
