In the 17th century, anatomical demonstrations by the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons evolved into crowded events which were requently attended by members of the public. During this time, the Guild commissioned a large number of group paintings to such famous Dutch artists like Rembrandt and Cornelis Troost. Frank IJpma evaluates the painted ‘anatomy lessons’ of the Guild of Surgeons in Amsterdam from an anatomical and surgical perspective.
