For her PhD thesis, Hilde Pach-Oosterbroek examines the ‘Kurant’, a Yiddish newspaper which was printed in Amsterdam between the period of 9 August 1686 and 5 December 1687. The ‘Kurant’ in the world’s oldest known Yiddish newspaper. By throwing light on the newspaper’s selection and editing mechanisms, Pach-Oosterbroek wishes to find out whether these mechanisms might be able to reveal the intentions of its makers and about the kind of ‘imagined community’ of readers that the Kurant might have helped to create.
