Maartje Stols-Witlox focuses on historical recipes for preparatory layers for oil painting in North West Europe during the period 1550-1900. She examines a large collection of recipes throughout a long time period by analysing recipe texts and their context, by recipe-based reconstructions and by comparing these reconstructions with actual paintings. Knowledge of the materials employed in the preparatory layers is important both for better informed conservation and restoration strategies as well as for art technological investigations.
