A lot of the incoming visual information that reaches the retina (a structure at the back of the eye) is not useful and actually redundant. In the spatial domain, the visual scene contains areas that do not differ in colour or texture and, therefore, do not contain much detail. Rozan Vroman throws light on the mechanisms underlying the processing at the first retinal synapse.
