It was long assumed that only one type of polyp - the adenoma - could develop into colorectal cancer. However, studies conducted over the past few years have shown that other polyp types - known as serrated polyps - can also develop into colorectal cancer. These polyps were traditionally viewed as benign, and were not removed during colonoscopy examinations. Yark Hazewinkel's research focuses on the epidemiological and endoscopic characteristics of serrated polyps.
