One in eight couples in the Western world does not succeed in conceiving with one year of unprotected intercourse. In about half of these couples, the male partner has poor semen quality. Liesbeth Visser assesses a number of potential additional genetic causes of poor semen quality, in particular potential novel causes of the well-defined phenotypes asthenozoospermia and Sertoli Cell Only Syndrome, at levels ranging from single-nucleaotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to copy number variants (CNVs).
