Many cases of congenital cardiac defects are inexplicable. Abnormalities in the heart’s connective tissue comprise a large part of cardiac defects. Previous research has shown that the Follistatin-like 1 (Fstl1) gene is specifically transcribed in the connective tissue of the heart. Marc Sylva seeks to better understand the molecular biology of the developing heart with regard to the function of Fstl1.
