Founded three days after the liberation of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Institute for War Documents (RIOD, now called the NIOD, Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies) was given the remit to collect information about World War II and to use the information to write the history of the occupation of the Netherlands. Annemieke van Bockxmeer studies the creation of the RIOD's collection in the period 1945 to 1950.
