Kidneys are highly sensitive to hypoxia (the inadequate supply of oxygen) and acute kidney injury frequently occurs after a disturbed cardiovascular response in patients who are in a critical condition. Acute kidney injury reduces the prospects of recovery of patients suffering from septic shock. Emre Almaç studies the effects of blood transfusion, fluid resusitation and supplementary therapeutic strategies for the protection of renal oxygenation (kidney oxygen consumption).
