After a trauma or a nervous system disorder the immune system is activated to remove damaged cells and tissue. The complement system, which is part of the innate immune system, plays a pivotal role here. Marleen Sta studies the role of the complement system in the breakdown and recovery of nerves during degeneration and regeneration in the peripheral nervous system. She is also examining how the system behaves in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disorder.
