Over recent decades, patterns of upgrading and downgrading have changed significantly in many Western cities. Many neighbourhoods experienced a transformation from disadvantaged areas with bad housing conditions to popular high-end neighbourhoods. Nevertheless, many neighbourhoods still face decline. Annalies Teernstra focuses on processes of upgrading and downgrading in the highly regulated context of the Netherlands. Her aim is twofold: to acquire a better understanding of how processes of upgrading and downgrading manifest themselves, and to obtain insight into the way in which the highly regulated context of the Netherlands contributes to the processes.
