So-called rare earth ions doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have recently attracted considerable attention because of their unique optical properties. Despite many effort to utilise UCNPs in biomedical applications, there are still major challenges to overcome to reach targeted imaging and therapy of cancer cells at an early stage. Kai Liu focuses on surface modification and functionalization of these particles with the aim of improving their efficiency in cancer imaging and therapy.
