In 1653 the English priest Richard Flecknoe dedicated a collection of letters and poems to Béatrix de Cusance (1614-1663), calling her ‘the most excellent of her Sex’. That same year the Dutch diplomat Constantijn Huygens admitted that he struggled with amorous feelings for the very same lady. Ineke Huysman explores De Cusance’s role in political and cultural networks, her historical significance, and shows how the accepted image of her is at odds with historical reality.
