Heidi Sauls performs an ethnographic study focused on incarcerated young males who are awaiting trial in a secure care facility in South Africa. Her thesis is centred on the social composition of a secure care facility and the daily activities and interactions that take place within its walls. She follows the boys in the trajectories they take inside and outside the criminal justice system, and throws light on the families, communities and staff with whom they come into contact.
