The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis regulates the production of thyroid hormones (TH) by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones are important for many processes in the body. Consequently, a shortage or overproduction of TH can lead to severe health issues. Emmely de Vries investigates the underlying mechanisms of the changes in type 2 deiodinase (D2) in the hypothamalus during inflammation and the changes in type 3 deiodinase in the liver and white adipose tissue during fasting.
