Heart failure, and the hypertrophy or thickening of the ventricular walls that is often associated with it, is placing a growing burden on the healthcare system in the Netherlands. Most treatments still target the symptoms instead of the underlying causes of the disease. Winandus Wijnen’s research investigates the molecular mechanisms that induce hypertrophy, an approach that could produce new therapeutic targets or markers for early diagnosis, thereby improving treatment.
