Erik Baas compares two surgical methods for lengthening the mandible or lower jaw. He studied a total of 65 patients. Thirty underwent a distraction osteogenosis, where two ends of a fractured bone are gradually moved apart, allowing new bone to form in the gap, and the other 35 underwent a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, which involves moving the position of the jaw.
