Marine microorganisms form the largest reservoir of living organic carbon in the ocean and play an important role in the circulation of nutrients and energy flows. Kristina Mojica studies the influence that vertical stratification has on sources of mortality in marine microorganisms (viral lysis versus grazing). The Northeast Atlantic functions as the model system for her study.
