Jan van Wingerden studies the use of evidence-based medicine in clinical decision-making surrounding poststernotomy mediastinitis, a rare but often fatal infectious complication that can occur after a sternotomy. This infection of the chest wall and the mediastinum (the cavity between the lungs) is characterised by an unpredictable course in terms of speed and intensity.
