Lukas Verburgt provides a historical investigation of the theoretical conditions underlying the idea of a formal axiomatic system, thus paving the way for modern mathematics and logic and also the modernisation of probability theory by way of measure theory. He does so through detailed historical studies of the work of nineteenth century and early twentieth-century probabilists, mathematicians and logicians (ca. 1830-1930).
