Up until about 30 years ago, virtually the only treatment offered to patients with advanced larynx cancer was a total laryngectomy (i.e. the complete removal of the larynx). These days an increasing number of patients undergo organ-preserving treatments such as radiotherapy, sometimes combined with chemotherapy. Jacqueline Timmermans studies the outcomes of both types of treatment.
