A person with a spider phobia may avoid going into his basement because there might be spiders there. He may even avoid reading the book Charlotte's Web to his children. Such excessive avoidance behaviour can have a negative effect on an individual's functioning. Research into threat avoidance can help us understand how adaptive avoidance becomes maladaptive, and we can use this information to improve current treatments for clinically severe anxiety and maladaptive avoidance. As part of her research, Inna Arnaudova introduces a new model for threat avoidance response selection and execution.
