Asthma is considered a complex respiratory disease of which various phenotypes are being discovered. Clinical biomarkers have shown to be successful in the management of asthma phenotypes. To increase the understanding of this complex disease and discover new biomarkers will require knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved. Ariane Wagener reviews the strenghts and limitations of new techniques to increase understanding of asthma and discover new biomarkers.
