Karel van Mander was a sixteenth century art historian, principally known for his Schilder-boeck (1604), a work consisting of six parts. Saskia Cohen-Willner discusses the part that focuses on the lives of Italian painters. She studies the text’s composition, the connections to its major sources and its position within the larger work as a whole. In this way she arrives at a new analysis of the author’s intentions.
