Maarten van Klundert carries out research into viral replication of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). There is one particular protein that the virus needs to produce in order to initiate and maintain HBV RNA transcription, which is the X protein. Because this protein plays such a critical role in HBV replication, Van Klundert’s aim is to delineate the mechanism through which it supports HBV replication.
