Haoxin Fan’s research focuses on the nitrogen cycle in Dutch coastal waters and sediments. Her main hypothesis is that the different steps of this cycle are separated from each other both spatially and temporally, rather than occurring in the same place and time, in a closed cycle. To verify this, she applies multiple experimental approaches to investigate N2 fixation, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation and nitrification in selected coastal ecosystems in the Netherlands.
