In his research, Filippo Bertoni explores possible meanings of ‘togetherness’, to gain insights that can help to rethinks politics as something that takes place not just between people but also includes nature. He derives his lessons on togetherness and living together from detailed field studies focusing on earthworms, including observations of ecologists who study earthworms and amateurs learning how to ‘charm’ earthworms out of the soil to collect data on them, as well as his own experience of living with tower of waste-eating worms in his kitchen. The togetherness demonstrated by earthworms revolves around eating and being eaten – a perspective ignored up till now by that political theory, with its emphasis on conversation.
